3. What do I need to do before DSL installation day?
-
Install a 10/100 Ethernet or NIC card in each computer that you plan to connect to the DSL circuit.
-
Be sure that the phone box is accessible to the installer. If the phone box is inside the house, in the garage or behind a gate, someone over the age of 18 with authorization will need to be there to provide the installer access.
-
Decide the location of your DSL modem. Please be aware that certain distances and custom wiring configurations will incur additional charges.
4. What types of DSL are there?
-
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line):
Asymmetric DSL is where the download and upload speed will differ, with the available download bandwidth usually being larger contributing to higher speeds. This is the least expensive "always-on" broadband service ClearPath offers, and is a good choice for the home user or teleworker who is not running business critical applications. No Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are available with this service regarding latency and network availability.
-
SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line):
Symmetric DSL means that the download and upload speeds are the same. This service is suitable for business users who require more dependable high speeds in both directions, and works well for small offices running business applications. SLA guarantees are available with this service, but only when purchased with iVPN services.
-
IDSL (Integrated Digital Subscriber Line):
This too is a Symmetric version of DSL, but instead it combines the regular DSL formats with ISDN technology. This enables the distance limitations to decrease, while lowering the total available bandwidth (and ultimately speed). IDSL is only available as a symmetric 128Kbps (may be as high as 144Kbps in some locations). Sometimes, due to distance limitations, IDSL may be the only available DSL option.
